L FASHION MAGAZINE
A couture fashion magazine based on the 1980s hit, The Shining. This piece exhibits my own personal photography, model & set design, typography, and spread layout design, resulting in a complete magazine. The goal of this piece was to convey the themes and aesthetics of the movie using explicitly abstract fashion choices and set design.
SKETCH. HOW DOES
TYPE INTERACT...?
In my opinion, this project truly showcases my process in the most detail. Every little bit of this magazine was a working cog in a very well-oiled machine, and thus the foundation had to be strong. The only way I can do this is through sketching and research.
A blank canvas can feel so incredibly scary, and that is exactly what this project started as. When everything is made from scratch, you need to know the fundamentals to fit everything together. And that’s where sketching comes in, or more so... thumbnailing. The reason why small quick sketches are so important is that it takes out all of the “fun stuff”. We’re looking at this on a scientific level. Now I am able to fully picture hierarchy, composition, and user flow instead of getting hung up on my type choice right away.
Although I can firmly say that my design process is never fully linear, I believe in strong foundational starting points. Even when I decide to come back to sketches or change type and photography later on, this is what sets me up for success.
